“We stand with the Cuban people,” President Biden said.
Thousands of Cubans are taking part in protests against the communist government that began on Sunday. They are crying “Down with the dictatorship.” President Miguel Diaz-Canel has called on his supporters to confront the demonstrators. The rallies began spontaneously in several cities in the country as Cuba endures its worst economic crisis in 30 years, with chronic shortages of electricity and food.
In a largely Cuban district of Tampa, and in Little Havana, Florida, many Cuban refugees are joining in solidarity with the Cuban protesters. Florida leaders have also voiced support for Cubans protesting their government.
Governor Ron DeSantis stated on social media, “Florida supports the people of Cuba as they take to the streets against the tyrannical regime in Havana. The Cuban dictatorship has repressed the people of Cuba for decades and is now trying to silence those who have the courage to speak out against its disastrous policies.”
In a statement, President Biden said, “We stand with the Cuban people and their clarion call for freedom and relief from the tragic grip of the pandemic and from the decades of repression and economic suffering to which they have been subjected by Cuba’s authoritarian regime.”
